CHAPTER EIGHT

JANE TOOK IN THE SCENE.

Henry, looking scared and apologetic, cleaning the dishes with a mighty scouring. Lenny appeared drained and damaged, as if this was not what he wanted today. Boy, sniffing and growling near Lenny’s feet.

And that woman.

Jane could only describe the woman standing there as a cross between someone out of the Dynasty cast and a show-girl she’d once seen at a party back in Little Rock.

Henry glanced around, his expression pinched. “I tried to tell her no. She came on in anyway. Then she got all bent out of shape when I told her you weren’t here.”

“I’m not all bent out of shape,” the woman said, waving red-lacquered fingertips. “I just happened to be in the neighborhood—”

Boy turned and growled again then advanced a step, his teeth bared.

The woman actually looked scared. “Lenny, call off that impossible dog, okay? C’mon, honey. It’s just me.”

Jane wasn’t sure if the woman was speaking to the dog or the man, since they both had the same threatening grimace on their faces.

Henry tossed a paper towel in the trash. “I guess I’ll be going now. Sorry, Lenny.”

“What in the world is he doing here, anyway?” the woman asked. “I thought after Bertie passed—”

“That’s enough,” Lenny said, pointing a finger toward the woman. “Not another word about Bertie.”

The woman shut up, but put a hand on her hip as her gaze moved over the room. “Man, everyone sure is touchy around here, and when was the last time you cleaned this place, anyway?” Then she zoomed in on Jane. “Interesting hairdo. I guess you’ve had one of Wanda’s famous makeovers, too.”

Jane didn’t want to discuss that. “Thanks, Henry,” she said, ushering him to the door. The woman gave her a look that was both dismissive and curious then focused her attention back on Lenny.

Henry leaned close and whispered. “Watch it, Coach. That one is bad news.”

Jane nodded. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

She turned around to Lenny, fascinated by the way he and the woman seemed to be at a standoff.

“Lenny?” There was a long whine in his name as the woman threw her bronzed metallic leather bag onto the table. “What’s going on?”

“What are you doing here, Candace?” Lenny asked, moving away. Not waiting for an answer, he held the advancing woman at arm’s length. “You know I don’t like surprise visits.”

Candace gave him a long pout. “I told you, suga’, I was just passing through. It’s been such a long time.”

Petulance personified, Jane noted. And such a stereotypical spoiled rich girl, it wasn’t even challenging. An easy mark for a womanizer like Lenny. Or maybe Lenny had been the easy mark in this case. From the look in the woman’s eyes, she still had it bad for the football player.

“I’ve told you, don’t come here without calling first. This place isn’t exactly on the beaten path. You went way out of your way. And I want to know why.”

Jane cleared her throat. “Maybe I should leave you two alone?”

Lenny looked up first.
